Dive and snorkel Menjangan
• Boats to Menjangan Island leave from Labuhan Lalang (see map below)
• The price for snorkelling depends on how many people are in a boat, and the price includes park fees. Expect to pay around Rp450,000 to Rp500,000 per person
• Snorkelling is a half-day activity, and you'll usually go into the water twice, in different locations. If you're keen to spend more time under water, have a word with your guide – perhaps for a small about extra you'll be able to visit another site.
Snorkelling and diving
The abundance of marine life around Menjangan Island is absolutely staggering, and the corals that are left (many have been killed by increasing ocean temperatures and anchors) are bright and colourful. It really is a special place to explore under water.
When you get to Labuhan Lalang you'll need to goto the park ranger office, where you'll be assigned a guide and will have to pay the park fee. The price you will pay will depend on how many people are in your boat – you might be able to join another party, or else take your own boat if you prefer. The boat ride to Menjangan Island is about 20 minutes. There are toilets and (open) showers at the jetty.
Trash is a problem all around South East Asia and, although Menjangan Island falls within West Bali National Park, there can be a lot (as in, disturbing amounts) of plastic in the water at times. There's no specific time of year that trash conditions are better – it depends on so many variables. If you'd like to do your bit to save the planet, you might like to snorkel with a net bag or wear boardies with pockets, and pick out some of the plastic you come across.
IF YOU'RE HUNGRY...
Take some water and a snack on the boat – you won't be able to buy anything on the island, and snorkelling does often work up a hunger. When you return to the jetty, there are some small simple restaurants where you can order an Indonesian meal.
