Diving in Pemuteran
THE ESSENTIALS

• For those who snorkel: most of the dive operators rent out snorkelling gear for around Rp50,000 per day for mask, snorkel and fins. You can snorkel from the beach, and there are reefs offshore that you can snorkel from a boat. Ask the dive operators for their rates (around Rp300,000 per person).

• While you're in this part of Bali don't miss the opportunity to dive or snorkel at Menjangan Island, close to Pemuteran. All dive operators will offer this trip. As the island falls within the national park the cost to dive/snorkel here is quite high – but it's worth it.
​
• Keep in mind that some dive operators' insurance will cover you for time spent on their property, but not when you are out in the water. If insurance is a concern for you, then be sure to ask about this before you sign up.
Diving

Why should you go diving and snorkelling around Pemuteran? The waters here are rich with a chain of dive sites and variety of marine life – from soft corals and sea fans to turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks, pelagics and, occasionally, whalesharks. The topography is varied, and there are beautiful coral reefs – with plenty of walls, nooks and crannies – to explore, as well as underwater "islands". The majority of the dive sites are less than 10 minutes from land, which means divers have plenty of time in the day to enjoy the beach, or their hotel's pool, or take a walk up Bukit Kursi. Menjangan Island, one of the best dive sites in Bali and an absolute must for divers and snorkellers, is 30 minutes away from Pemuteran by boat.

The logistics
There are many dive operators based in Pemuteran – almost every hotel and homestay will be associated with one, so you might want to go with whoever they recommend, or you could take a stroll down the main road or the beachfront to find an operator whose price suits your budget. The cost of diving in Pemuteran is quite reasonable: one of the most expensive in the area (due to their insurance, standards, boats and quality of gear) is Karang Divers, which is based in the beachfront at Amertha Bali Villas. They charge Rp370,000 per dive from shore, and Rp520,000 per dive from a boat, with prices decreasing the more dives you do.
