The best budget accommodation option within a short walk of Medewi’s world-class surf-spot. Medewi Beach Inn, a favourite with old-time Medewi regulars for decades, has undergone major improvements in the last couple of years. The atmospheric timber bar and restaurant was added on the Medewi’s main beach strip a few years ago and is one of the best places to eat, chill and watch surf-movies (projected from above a surfboard suspended from the ceiling).

What's the appeal?

 

Medewi Beach Inn has always been a favourite with surfers – and the addition of a swimming pool has made it popular with families, too. For the most peaceful and romantic options choose to stay in one of the upper-floor rooms in the new section (which are more secluded and private), offering a wonderful terrace and spectacular views over the rooftops and across the paddies east of Medewi. On a clear morning you’ll see the conical peak of Batukaru volcano. Medewi Beach Inn is so conveniently located – once you're here you own't need to use any transport other than your feet. A short walk from this hotel are the surf point, board rentals, restaurants, massages, laundry, shops. Life here is chilled, the vibe is friendly so you'll meet other travellers and surfers passing through; central to the hotel is a large restaurant area, which is also a gathering point for friends. Children are very welcome here.

Rooms

 

The 13 rooms are all air-conditioned (no fan or TV) and all have private bathrooms with showers. The bathrooms in the budget rooms are a little rundown but these rooms have comfortable verandas opening onto a peaceful little tropical garden. For an extra Rp100,000 you can upgrade to the newer rooms over-looking the swimming pool. These rooms also offer hot water showers. The huge family room on the ground floor has a double bed and two singles – but families with small children should be aware that the big glass doors open right onto the unprotected swimming pool. 

Breakfast is not included in the price but there is a good restaurant on the property.

Facilities

 

The swimming pool is right next to a comfortable seating area with huge cosy sofa-chairs and a TV. There is also a two-storey wooden deck with beanbags, perfect for dozing, reading or simply checking out the surf through the palms. The staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful and it’s largely due to their sense of hospitality that so many people return year after year. Motorbike and surfboard rental are available and the staff can arrange airport transfers and advise on tours around the area. The property has reliable Wi-Fi throughout.

Location

 

The location is hard to beat. A 100m stroll to the surf-point means you can check the conditions regularly and mosey back for your board. Follow the dirt-track at the back of the hotel along the river and you’ll have what feels like your own private access to the paddle-out spot (through a lovely coconut grove inhabited by the pretty Balinese cows). It is also the easiest access to the righthander and the perfect route to take for a peaceful walk along the (usually) deserted beach. There are at least five recommended eateries within a 150m stroll, meaning that you could stay here as long as you wish without even having to cross a busy road!.
