Puri Dajuma is one of our favourite hotels on the island. It's peaceful, has two stunning swimming pools, and is a wonderful place to simply unwind. There is something very special about this family-owned hotel; it's difficult to define exactly what it is, but we're pretty sure a lot has to do with the fact that the family that owns Puri Dajuma have so much love and respect for the staff, the property and the environment. It's a feel-good place that makes a fantastic effort to be sustainable in its operations.

What's the appeal?

Puri Dajuma is one of those hotels where you feel instantly at home and, while this classifies as a luxury hotel, there are no airs and graces here. It's a beautiful property with extensive tropical gardens that wrap the hotel in privacy. Relax, enjoy some down-time or do some of the many tours that the hotel offers around the area (including trips to Bunut Bulong, to watch buffalo races, to nearby temples and to walk in rice paddies). Puri Dajuma is a five-minute drive from Medewi surf point, and the hotel has a complimentary shuttle service if you want to head to that village. The beaches around here are grey volcanic sand, and spectacular for walking along – particularly when low tide falls at sunset. There is a small and often calm bay next to the hotel, which is lovely for boogie-boarding and SUPing.

Conscious travel & eco efforts

The owners and team at Puri Dajuma take special care with ensuring that their property is run with respect to Balinese traditions, and they follow the principles of the Balinese philosophy Tri Hita Karana: harmony with the gods, with nature and between people. All of the staff here come from the surrounding villages and the hotel takes their social responsibility towards their staff very seriously. Their efforts to reduce the hotel's impact on the environment include a commitment to zero marine pollution; no chemicals are used in the maintenance of the resort's extensive gardens; composting and recycling waste; various recycling initiatives; supplying bathroom products that are kind to the environment and using energy-saving equipment. The hotel also supports various community projects and initiatives, and buys  fresh produce and seafood from local farmers and fishermen.

Pet friendly

Puri Dajuma is a pet friendly hotel, and there is no additional charge for your animals. Please do, however, notify the hotel in advance if you will be arriving with your pets.

Rooms

There are two parts to Puri Dajuma: the cottages, which overlook the pool and beach, and the villas, which surround a second pool. Each Cottage room has its own veranda with a hammock outside as well as a bathroom that opens to a small, private garden (you shower under the stars). The buildings comprise of two rooms alongside each other, and so these work well for families. The villas are clustered into buildings of three villas each, so if you're travelling as a family the villas can be interlinked to form one space. Each villa has a large stone bath and a veranda that looks onto a 50-metre-long swimming pool (which has a small water slide at the end). In each cluster, the middle villa is double-storey, with the bathroom and bedroom above and a lounge and kitchenette below. There are also various suites around the property; our favourite is the beachfront Pondok Segara, a luxury two-bedroom timber "hut" that is fantastic for families and honeymooners.

Facilities

Puri Dajuma is a five-minute drive from Medewi surf point, and the hotel has a complimentary shuttle service if you want to head to that village. The hotel has three restaurants, two swimming pools and a spa, as well as a variety of games – table tennis, boulle, boogie boards, SUPs. The hotel also offers various day tours around the area – from snorkelling in Menjangan to visiting rice paddies and bicycle trips of the village.

Yoga

The yoga space at Puri Dajuma Eco Resort takes full advantage of its tropical setting: it looks out through the trees onto the ocean. Classes are open to anyone (not only guests) and usually held here daily at 11am, but you'll need to book at reception a day in advance (or email info@dajuma.com if you're not a guest). Classes are Rp150,000 each; mats and blocks are provided.

Location

Puri Dajuma is surrounded by trees and a beautiful fine black sand beach, just outside the village of Pekutetan. It is a five-minute drive (by road) to Medewi, and you can see the surf point in the distance from the hotel. It will take about 30 minutes to walk to Medewi along the beach (with some river crossings).
