Taman Wana is a beautiful retreat in the mountains above Negara. It's a tranquil place for those who want to escape the crowds or experience a completely different aspect of Bali. Pack the books you've been meaning to read, and settle in for some quality rest.

What's the appeal?

Anyone looking for a beautiful place to relax, unwind and hide away from the world will delight in spending a few nights at Taman Wana, a small family-run resort that's tucked into the hills above Negara. Compared with Bali's coastline, it's cooler up here in the mountains – although time spent alongside the infinity pool, which has a gorgeous view over the nearby dam, is an absolute must. This resort is just outside the predominantly Catholic village of Palasari, and you'll have a stunning view of the church on the road up here: you'll see the roof of the church breaking through the palm trees, with three of Java's dramatic volcanoes in the distance.

Rooms

The rooms at Taman Wana Resort are large – double the size of most hotel rooms – and wrapped in windows that make the most of the views. They have balconies too, with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as bathrooms that are open-air. The rooms are very comfortable and light... and apart from the views there's not much difference between the lagoon view (which have a view of the dam) and the courtyard rooms (which have a view of the fields and gardens).  Some of the rooms are inter-leading, so request one of these if you're travelling as a family.

Facilities

The gorgeous swimming pool is the focal point of the resort, and set just back from it is a lovely lounge and dining area. There is no dedicated spa area, but Taman Wana does have a spa menu and in-room treatments (massages and body scrubs) are easily arranged. Breakfast is included in the rate; lunch and dinner are served here too – which is convenient, as Taman Wana is quite far from any eateries. The restaurant prices are reasonable: from Rp50,000 to Rp80,000 for a light meal, and from Rp60,0000 to Rp125,000 for a main. Bicycles are available for rent, for those who want to explore the area.

Location

Taman Wana Resort is about half an hour west of Negara. It's close to Palasari, a predominantly Catholic village that's up in the hills and adjacent to Palasari Dam. The road from Palasari to Taman Wana is quite bad in some places, but it is accessible by car. It's a lovely drive here from Palasari – be sure to look out for the volcanoes of Java, and the roof of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
