Temuku Pupuan is a beautiful three-bedroom farmhouse located up in the quiet hills of West Bali. From here you can see Batukaru, the second-highest peak on Bali, and you also have exquisite views over farmlands and plantations down towards the coastline. It's perfectly suited to a family looking for a quiet getaway, or for a creative person who's wanting some peace and space to work on a project.

What's the appeal?

Temuku Pupuan is a very special place. The spacious home, built in the 1980s, is still owned by the same family who built it and, decades ago, set up an organic farm adjacent to the house. The lawns are extensive and the house overlooks these, rice paddies, and the rolling hills below. Life up here is peaceful – you can go walking in the area and do a workshop on the farm, but it's also a brilliant place to bring a bag full of books and a few bottles of red wine, and to enjoy a languid life up in the cooler mountain air. For a family getaway, Temuku is perfect. There is a cot and high chair for a little one, and also swings, a slide and a house on stilts for kids. Order fresh organic veggies from the farm, and bread, cookies and pies from their bakery.

Earth-friendly practices

The family house is set on an organic farm, and Temuku has been involved in running organic farming and permaculture workshops with surrounding communities. The house is run on permaculture principles too – anything that can be recycled or reused is; organic waste is composted; plastic waste is taken to a garbage bank in Denpasar. They've also been involved in waste-management projects. Temuku regularly hosts children from an orphanage in Denpasar – they spend time at the farmhouse and do fun activities at the bakery and farm.

Pet friendly

Pets are welcome at Temuku Pupuan, but please do keep in mind that as this is a working farm, there free-ranging cows, chickens and ducks – so it is essential that dogs are very well behaved. If you will be travelling with your pets please mention this first with the farmhouse owners when you make your booking.

The house

The farmhouse has three large bedrooms: the main bedroom is upstairs and has an en-suite bathroom with large bath and outdoor shower. There is an office space up here, too. The two downstairs bedrooms share a bathroom. The ground floor of the house is wrapped in glass doors, allowing for a flowing sense of space  throughout the interior and making the garden and views a part of the home experience. There are large, comfortable day beds inside, a family-sized dining table and a kitchen that is equipped for self-catering (although most guests choose to have their meals provided by Temuku). The family that owns the property lives next-door – but the garden is so vast you'll feel as though you have it all to yourself.

Facilities

The house has an equipped kitchen, but there is a comprehensive menu and staff can prepare meals for you. There is a wonderful play area for young children (with a swing, slide and stilted house) and a table tennis table, too. Refreshingly, there is no TV here but boardgames are provided. Out in the garden there is a fire-pit space where you can barbecue or enjoy sitting beside the fire in the evenings. As well as an organic farm the family also has a small bakery, and so you can order fresh produce and bread, pies or biscuits in advance of your stay. There are a few forest walks you can do from the house, and guests are invited to visit the farm and participate in a workshop there. Breakfast – bread from the Temuku bakery, with butter and homemade jam – is included in the rate. There is a lunch and dinner menu too, with meals reasonably priced ( from Rp35,000 to Rp65,000).

Location

Temuku is located near the village of Pupuan, which is 26 pretty kilometres inland – and uphill – from Balian. The altitude is about 700m and it's a little cooler here than on the coast, so bring a warmer layer of clothing with you as the evenings can be quite cool (by Bali standards, anyway).
