Situated within West Bali National Park, The Menjangan is an immensely peaceful and relaxing boutique resort that's just across the bay from the towering volcanoes of Java. Standing here on the white coral beach and watching wild deer browsing, you feel a world away from the bustle of Bali's more touristy destinations. The staff here are very involved with taking care of the environment within the park, and they also share and implement sustainable practices such as composting  and waste management with their communities. The majority of the staff here are from nearby villages.

What's the appeal?

If you love being surrounded by nature, enjoy privacy or want to go snorkelling and diving, you'll love your time spent at this retreat. The spectacular underwater world of Menjangan Island is a 20-minute boat trip away; the forests around the resort are home to the very rare Bali starling (the morning bird walk is highly recommended); and deer often wander past the villas. It's quiet; it's peaceful; it'll leave you feeling rejuvenated.

Conscious travel & eco efforts

The Menjangan has always tried to keep its eco footprint as light as possible. Along with supplying the bathrooms with soaps and shampoos that are organic, water is served in glass bottles and there is a massive effort to reduce the amount of plastic waste the resort produces. The staff here are very involved in taking care of the natural environment within the national park, and they also share and implement sustainable practices such as composting, waste management and recycling initiatives within their communities. The majority of the staff at this resort are from nearby villages and have worked here for many, many years.

Rooms

The Menjangan offers two types of accommodation: there are eight Beach Villas, which are literally on a private white coral beach. These comfortable rooms have outdoor bathrooms (soaking in the tub, under the stars, is a real treat) and the front verandahs come with beanbags and sun loungers. Tucked into the forest, the tranquil Monsoon Lodge is a five-minute drive from the resort's restaurant and beach (when you need to get anywhere, one of the staff will drive you in a safari-style buggy). The 16 large rooms surround a swimming pool and due to the design, offer guests less privacy.

Facilities

There are two restaurants: one on the beach and the other in a tower (yes, a tower) that overlooks forest, sea and volcanoes. The Menjangan has a waterfront spa, where rooms are built in the mangroves. There are stables on the property (think: horse rides at sunset) and the resort offers guided walks and birding tours. At the dive centre you can arrange kayaking trips, snorkelling and diving.

Location

The Menjangan is situated within the boundary of West Bali National Park, near the north-west point of Bali. The entire property is covered with forest and mangroves.
