This beautiful, open home is the reason that many guests have travelled to Bali. It's surrounded by a verdant tropical garden that's always bursting with colour, and the open downstairs living area makes the most of this gorgeous tropical setting. The bathroom is a garden – the shower one of the best in Bali. Relax on the lawn under the old mango tree, chill in the hammock or cozy up on the swinging chair in this airy bamboo retreat. The Writers' Treehouse is a relaxing, creative space that's full of home comforts.

What's the appeal?

The Writers' Treehouse is the perfect retreat for those who’re wanting to escape the crowds of Bali’s popular tourist spots – and heaven for those who're wanting to read, write, paint and take long walks on the beach. It's been very carefully designed to make the most of the surrounding setting: the downstairs living area has no walls on two sides, the large bathroom is open-air and the garden simply beautiful.

Conscious travel & eco efforts

The walls of this home are made from bamboo and the roof is thatch – these materials, along with the lush garden and big, shady trees keep the house cool and free of the need for air-con, which keeps a small energy footprint. One wall is made from recycled pallets, and most of the furniture was commissioned from local artisans. The house is kept well maintained and when something does need to be replaced it is up cycled or recycled whenever possible. Many different families benefit from guests staying here; from the family that provides transport to another that helps with cleaning and laundry; another that supplies the coffee; another the gas and drinking water; and another family who takes care of guest relations. There's a comprehensive guide to the area, with a directory to many local businesses, shops and artisans. Organic waste is composted in the garden and free-range neighbourhood chickens scratch through the organic matter and help to kick off the composting process. Plastic waste is recycled.

The Treehouse

Although the foundations are on the ground, it's called a treehouse because it was built around a large mango tree, and upstairs the glass doors open onto its branches. It is  a cool, peaceful space surrounded by trees; the tropical garden has an abundance of flowers and butterflies. Downstairs, the house is open to the natural environment; upstairs the large windows and glass doors make the most of a beautiful view through trees of distant hills. It is a creative space that's full of home comforts.

Facilities

This private home is very comfortable. There is a queen-size bed and a day bed that is suitable for a child (although due to the design of the house, only children over the age of 8 are allowed to stay here). The kitchen is very well equipped: there is a gas oven and stove, a coffee machine, coffee grinder, blender, bread maker, baking equipment, fridge and freezer. The house has a lovely dining space under the mango tree, and a large, lush tropical garden. The large bathroom is set in an enclosed garden, with a shower under the stars. A yoga mat, blocks and strap is provided for those who want to practise at home; transport is easily arranged here, too.

Location

The Writers' Treehouse is situated on the top of a small hill, just a three-minute walk from the beach. It's a short walk from an eco resort, where you are welcome to use the gorgeous pools if you have a meal or spa treatment. The Writers' Treehouse is in the village of Pekutatan, a five-minute drive from Medewi.
