With four domed lumbung-style rooms that overlook a pool and rice paddies, Umma Bali Menjangan Retreat really is just that: a quiet escape from the world. The property oozes a sense of romance, and is an evocative and comfortable place to spend a night or two.

What's the appeal?

 

This lovely "retreat" is an evocative getaway on the fringe of the Menjangan area. There's not much around here in the mid-range price bracket, and Umma Bali Menjangan Retreat offers a wonderful option for travellers who're wanting more style and a sense of exclusivity – and romance. The rooms look out across rice paddies to distant hills, and there is a swimming pool in which to cool off. West Bali National Park and the jetty where boats to Menjangan Island depart are a 15-minute drive to the west; Pemuteran is 15 minutes to the east. If you'd prefer to dive/snorkel with one of the dive operators based at a resort, then places like The Menjangan, Mimpi Menjangan and Menjangan Dynasty are closer.

Rooms

 

The wooden lumbung-style rooms are large and comfortable. A big built-in cupboard is fronted with a mirror that reflects the view, so from the extra-large bed you feel as though you have paddies on both sides (if you have the curtains open, of course). There is a deep verandah out front of each room with a comfortable daybed, from which to enjoy the views. Each lumbung has its own private outdoor bathroom.

Facilities

 

There is a pool and restaurant area at one end of the resort. The restaurant has a patio area for seating and eating, with beautiful views over the paddies. The staff here can arrange various activities – from diving and snorkelling to trekking and cycling in West Bali National Park.

Location

 

Umma Bali Menjangan Retreat is, as its name suggests, away from the bustle. There isn't much here within walking distance, but it is a tranquil place to rest a while. The main entrance to West Bali National Park and the jetty where boats leave for Menjangan Island are about 15 minutes away by vehicle. Uma is also 15 minutes from Pemuteran, where there is a lovely beach to relax on and from which you can snorkel and dive. There are many dive operators here, and it's possible to get to Menjangan Island by boat from here, too.
