Villa Delmara is a sumptuous and exclusive four-bedroom villa with a view through palm trees onto the ocean. The communal areas (especially the idyllic pool) are irresistibly comfortable and appealing – it's the perfect destination for a family getaway, or a holiday with a small group of friends.

What's the appeal?

If you are even remotely interested in interior design you will be enthralled by Villa Delmara – it’s the sort of place you'll be likely to spend time upon arrival simply exploring. Or, alternatively, upping your Instagram game, if that’s your thing. There’s plenty to see in the area but this is not the sort of place you simply use as a base – stay here to spend time enjoying the wonderful pool and quiet reading corners. This is one of the best places you’ll ever find for a spot of perfect downtime. Simply stop, rest and enjoy being.

The villa

Villa Delmara, which stands atop a beachside hill, wraps around an infinity pool and has a view of the ocean. There is a media room (which can be converted into an additional bedroom), a well-equipped kitchen and a lounge area. Every one of the four bedrooms has been individually designed. They all have a chaise lounge which can be made into a bed for a toddler, should need be. If a cot or high chair is needed, one can be arranged (for an additional charge). While there are no dedicated children’s rooms there are several that would be ideal – but you might want to consider the safety options if travelling with young children. Factors to consider: one upper room, for example, has a low wall in the bathroom; the downstairs room has unguarded access to the pool; the lovely antique-style concrete tiles can be slippery when wet. One room has a free-standing outdoor bath which – a testimony to the uncrowded neighbourhood – allows you to soak while looking across coconut groves. (Maybe take a glance around to ensure that it’s not harvesting season first!).

Facilities

Breakfast – continental, vegetarian, Asian, American or Halal – is included in the price, and most guests tend to eat out for lunch and dinner. The villa owners have made arrangements with several restaurants in the area to deliver meals; a cook can also be arranged and, if guests would like to order groceries and alcohol to be delivered, this can be organised too. The kitchen is fully equipped (including dishwasher, microwave and fridge). The family media room has a large flat-screen TV with satellite channels and a DVD player, and WiFi is available throughout. There is a yoga teacher who lives nearby and who is available to teach private yoga classes at the villa. Baby-sitting services are on offer. In-villa massages can be arranged. We haven’t had an opportunity to experience the massages, but according to guest reviews they are outstanding.

Location

This contemporary gem is set on the edge of a wave-pounded beach and among meadows and coconut groves just east of Balian village. The restaurants on Balian beach are a five-minute drive away… or an 800m stroll along the sand and river – but don’t try to cross the river at high tide or when the river is high. Transport, scooter rentals and tours can be arranged, but ideally plan to spend at least some of your time enjoying the gardens, pool and lounges.
